Dorothy Snyder
Dorothy started the year 2018 with the resolution to start taking yoga classes at her local studio in the suburbs of Chicago. While initially drawn to yoga through a recommendation her doctor gave her to maintain flexibility and balance while aging with a chronic health condition, she soon found that the practice is not “just exercise” and is, in fact, the medicine she had been seeking. At the time, she worked a very stressful job in finance and felt exhausted by the fast-paced nature of the world. Born a millennial but identifying as a very old soul, Dorothy had always felt overwhelmed by life in a society that pushes grind/hustle culture and is constantly demanding that you work harder, do more, be more, consume more, and only rest once you have earned it. Devotion and dedication to a regular yoga practice showed her that rest and mental health are the priority. By turning inward through the connection yoga makes between the mind and body, she soon found the way to manage stress and reduce symptoms from her chronic health condition without taking any drugs! The yoga practice is the medicine.
After moving to Austin, TX in 2019, Dorothy completed her 200-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Program at Studio Satya in 2020 under the direction of Mary Richardson-Perez. She and her partner took a vacation to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2022 that led to them moving to Roanoke, VA in 2023. They were committed to leaving the big-city life behind them and embraced Roanoke as their hometown. In 2025, Dorothy completed a 41-hour Yoga Nidra Teacher Training Program at Yogaville under the direction of Chitra Sukhu. Dorothy is currently completing a 300-hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training Program at Uttara Yoga Studio under the direction of Kimberly Vest.
When not practicing or teaching yoga classes, you can find Dorothy spending time with the love of her life, Sean, and their sweet dog Loki, reading at least three things at once purely for the joy of it, supporting and celebrating library joy, hiking, working in her garden, napping, and finding all the ways to deeply relax.
