Backbends and Inversions belong to the energetic principle of Brahmana, which means to energize. These asanas promote the feeling of expansion, increase vagal tone and improve mental acuity. In the season where we experience less light and warmth, backbends and inversions create internal heat, lifting and lightening our energy.

Explore ways of unblocking tension in the shoulders when backbending; find more spaciousness and length in inversions. Build the capacity to experience ease in these challenging poses.

Backbends, when explored safely and sequentially, slowly shift patterns of constriction in the chest and diaphragm, allowing the breath to re-establish a sense of ease in movement and posture. Inversions let the body enjoy a different experience with gravity, where the heart rests down while stagnant lymph is gently encouraged to move. For these reasons and more, these are the poses of immunity and longevity.
